Article Excerpt: Despite the popular focus on reducing emergency department visits as a way to save costs, in reality ED visits represent only 2 percent to 7 percent of healthcare spending in the United States. It’s not the ED visit that is the problem – it’s the fact that the patients don’t have other sources of care, or have unmanaged chronic problems that led them to our doors in the first place, and which will make them users of high healthcare resources in general. In my view, the goal should not be reducing use but, rather, using ED visits as a way to capture – and improve the health of – high-risk populations. And mHealth has strong potential as a way to do so.
