This study examined whether the PTSD Coach smartphone app could support adults recovering from a recent physical injury at risk for persistent pain and mental health problems. While the effectiveness of PTSD Coach has been assessed elsewhere, user experience data and qualitative research are sparse. In this study, 18 adult patients were asked to use PTSD Coach for one week and provide information about the challenges they faced during recovery and their experience using the app. The study aimed to identify the emotional and physical challenges experienced after injury, evaluate whether the app addressed these needs, and gather suggestions to improve its design and usability. Researchers recruited adults aged 18 to 65 who had visited an emergency department within 90 days of experiencing a serious physical injury. Participants downloaded PTSD Coach, received a brief introduction to its four main features, and later completed semi-structured interviews about their recovery experiences and their use of the app. Participants reported a range of challenges following injury, including physical pain, emotional distress, loneliness, transportation difficulties, and managing healthcare and insurance paperwork. Those who actively used the app generally found it helpful for managing stress, coping with reminders of the traumatic event, monitoring symptoms, and increasing awareness of their emotional well-being. Several participants also recognized strategies they had previously encountered in therapy. However, about one-third of participants used the app minimally or not at all, often because they were not comfortable with technology or lacked motivation to engage with it. Participants also suggested improvements, including the addition of a journaling feature to support emotional expression and recovery. Overall, most participants said they would recommend PTSD Coach because it provided useful coping strategies, symptom tracking tools, and mental health resources. As the first qualitative study to examine experiences with PTSD Coach following acute injury, the findings suggest that the app may help address an unmet need for psychological support during the early stages of recovery while highlighting opportunities to improve user engagement.
