Article Excerpt: Despite the ubiquity of mobile phones throughout the world, the expectations of the mHealth field are far from being met. Studies showing the effectiveness of mobile phone interventions on health outcomes are relatively rare, and there are typically difficulties with scaling up an intervention. Additionally, the proliferation of pilot studies has gotten so chaotic that at least two countries, Uganda and South Africa have limited further mHealth pilots. Emerging evidence regarding future implementation efforts suggests that programs need to evaluate health outcomes rather than feasibility only. Also, most successful projects have included several different partners, including the government and private sector – mobile phone providers, for example.
