Program Overview
Overview Summary
Woebot® (WB001) is a chatbot that provides relational agent-guided cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for individuals experiencing post-partum depression (PPD). WB001 is an 8-week digital therapy designed to be adjunctive to traditional therapy for women who have recently given birth to reduce symptoms associated with PPD. WB001’s software uses natural language processing to engage in near-human-like conversations with users. Users select key areas they wish to focus on: Bonding with my Baby, Feeding, Feeling Inadequate, Depression & Sadness, Frustration, Feeling Overwhelmed, Loneliness, My identity, Relationships, Sleep, Stress & Anxiety, and ‘Other stuff’. Once areas are selected, WB001 and the relational agent, referred to as “Woebot”, can engage with the user. The user experience includes mood tracking, conversations with Woebot, and structure or self-guided psychoeducational modules. Woebot has a clinical memory and notices when users repeat or suddenly change their selected key topics. WB001 uses a cognitive-behavioral therapy approach to facilitate cognitive restructuring, behavioral activation, emotional labeling, emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and mindfulness. Interpersonal therapy approaches are used for mother-infant binding, interpersonal communication analysis, communication skills building, and affective processing of role transitions. WB001 was granted a breakthrough device designation by the FDA in May 2021.
