Program Overview
Previct Alcohol is a Swedish eHealth system used in conjunction with therapy for alcohol use disorder. The system has three main pillars, a portable breathalyzer, a patient-facing smartphone application, and an online treatment platform for the patient and the caregiver. The combination of features from these three elements provides therapeutic support for both patients and caregivers throughout the complex recovery process for alcohol use disorder. Patients’ daily wireless breathalyzer data are sent directly to their therapist. These results, combined with in-app assessment data allow therapists to monitor patients’ sobriety and potential relapse triggers. The app also promotes the maintenance of a daily routine generated by the therapist designed to break use patterns and triggers. In-app features include semi-randomized daily breathalyzer requests, assessments, craving report tools, therapeutic training modules, and access to immediate help. In 2021, a new feature was added that utilizes artificial intelligence (AI) to predict relapses. This feature notifies caregivers of potential relapse and provides in-app support to patients. Following the addition of this feature, relapses declined, and targeted caregiver communications with patients increased.
