Program Overview
PNC-txt is a text-delivered intervention targeting substance use reduction in teens. This brief intervention utilizes motivational interviewing techniques within a peer relations framework to promote behavioral change i.e., reducing substance use behaviors. Users are sent pre-programmed text conversations four times a week over four weeks. Each text conversation is tailored to the responses provided by users at baseline. Baseline questions determine each user’s personal cannabis/tobacco beliefs and values. Each conversation comprises approximately ten texts requiring “YES” or “NO” responses and can be completed in 5-10min. Conversations fall into four content categories: attitudes, self-efficacy, peer network health, and action plans. Users can request additional motivational messages by texting “Boost” or withdrawal, and mental health issue support by texting “How2deal” or use management strategies by texting “How2reg” at any time. PNC-txt has been shown to reduce tobacco and cannabis use in adolescents and young adults.
