Program Overview
MyWayUp is a gamified web application designed to increase treatment retention among individuals with alcohol-related liver disease (ALD). After creating an avatar, users embark on a six-week virtual journey to the top of a mountain, ultimately reaching their chosen “wellness peak.” Each week, users encounter a new storytelling scenario that moves them further up their mountain trek, for example, crossing a river. To overcome the weekly storytelling challenge, users complete daily activities from their current educational and therapeutic module. Each completed storytelling scenario progresses the user to the next module. Users also have access to support from “mountain experts,” six professionals representing a hepatologist, psychiatrist, psychologist, nurse, social worker, and social educator, each corresponding to one of the six modules. The modules are designed to increase health literacy related to ALD, alcohol use disorder, and treatment, and are grounded in evidence-based approaches including motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioral therapy.
