  • My Student Body: A high-risk drinking prevention website for college students.

Chiauzzi E, Green TC, Lord S, Thum C, Goldstein M. Journal of American College Health. 2005. 53(6): 263-274. PMCID: PMC1885481.

Summary: In this single-blind randomized, controlled clinical trial, 265 college-aged binge drinkers received four consecutive weekly 20-minute sessions of either MSB:Alcohol or a text-based education only website. Through online self-assessments at baseline, post-intervention, and a 3-month follow-up the participants’ readiness to change, alcohol use, and alcohol-related problems were measured.

86% of MSB:Alcohol and 89% of control group participants completed all four sessions. The intervention proved especially effective for women, persistent binge drinkers, and low-motivation drinkers. Persistent reductions in alcohol use occurred across groups, however persistent heavy binge drinkers in MSB:Alcohol group experienced a more rapid decrease in average and peak consumption relative to those in control condition. Students in the trial indicated a significant difference in overall satisfaction with the MSB:Alcohol site compared with the control site; significantly more users of the intervention rated the site as successful in addressing health issue relevant to college students.

Take Away: The authors deem MSB:Alcohol a useful intervention for reaching important subgroups of college binge drinkers.
