Program Overview
iQuit Mindfully is a smoking cession intervention developed for use in racially and ethnically diverse populations of predominantly low socioeconomic status. iQuit Mindfully uses interactive text messages to promote mindfulness and smoking abstinence. Text messages to users are both personalized and adjustable based on users’ preferences. Users enter their names, reasons for quitting, and specifics about their smoking habits to generate financial savings calculations. This information facilitates the personalization of daily texts promoting mindfulness, specific mindfulness practices, strategies to aid smoking cessation, and mindfulness-based coping techniques. Text messages use a series of questions and flow logic to engage users and deliver appropriate content. Users select their preferred frequency and timing for daily text messages. Additionally, users can text keywords (CRAVE, STRESS, SLIP, FACT) anytime to receive an immediate text message, or a phone call with a mindfulness recording (keywords: MIND, BODY, 3MIN). All messages, modifications, personalization, and interactive flow features were developed using a user-centered design approach.
