Program Overview
ICan is a screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment digital intervention designed to target cannabis use. ICan progresses users through screening, a two-part, six-module brief intervention, and a referral to treatment. The screening process asks users to report on their current cannabis use, introspect on when they use cannabis, and complete four assessments: the Marijuana Motives Measure, the Alcohol Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test, and the Cannabis Use Disorders Identification Test Revised. The interactive modules for the brief interventions incorporate elements of cognitive behavioral therapy and motivational interviewing approaches to maximize effectiveness. Modules 1-3 allow users to find intrinsic motivation to change, set an achievable goal, and develop steps to achieve that goal. Modules 4-5 encourage building social support and provide information on what to expect with withdrawal, craving, and relapse. Users’ personalized plans are developed using the information provided during screening and in the first brief intervention. In the second brief intervention, the modules are focused on use reduction and sticking to their personalized treatment plan. Users are also provided information on specialized treatment services and encouraged to seek professional treatment.
