Program Overview
E-STOPS is a set of electronic tools built into the electronic health record (EHR) system (Epic) best practice alert. The set of tools is designed to facilitate the continued treatment of tobacco dependence with evidence-based interventions after smokers are discharged from hospitalization. Once a provider logs that a patient is a smoker, the E-STOPS alert is triggered. When accepted, the alert automatically provides a referral to the Connecticut State Smokers’ Quitline, opens the E-STOPS order set, and adds “tobacco use disorder” to the patient’s problem list. The E-STOPS order set includes all standard, evidence-based treatments for smoking, including pharmacologic and behavioral. If the E-STOPS prompt is not accepted within 24 hours of admission, the prompt is suppressed, and no action will be taken.
