Program Overview
CureApp is an outpatient, prescription mobile phone app for smoking cessation. Users provide initial information, including their age, sex, years of smoking, number of cigarettes smoked per day, medication (ie, varenicline or nicotine patch), and motivation and self-confidence regarding smoking cessation, which is synthesized by the app’s AI to develop tailored counseling advice. The app system comprises 4 features designed to maximize the therapeutic effect of pharmacological therapies and counseling: (1) a smoking cessation diary, (2) educational videos, (3) AI nurse chat sessions, and (4) advice for physicians. Users log their cessation status, physical condition, medication use, and any adverse events daily in their digital diary. Additionally, short text messages and 1-3-minute animated educational videos are provided to users with decreasing frequency over time. The delivery time and content of the videos are tailored to each user and vary depending on the drug prescribed (varenicline or nicotine patch) and lifestyle considerations. If a user experiences withdrawal symptoms, they can press a “call” button and connect with an AI nurse they can message, similar to a chatbot. The AI nurse also delivers encouraging messaging and advice in line with national guidelines. For providers, the website includes national guideline recommendations for counseling support.
