Article Excerpt: Two recent studies published in the journal PLoS One indicate mHealth technology have shown only modest benefits in developing countries—the locations where it is seen as having the most potential for good. Mobile health text messaging interventions targeting medication adherence and smoking cessation have shown clearer evidence of benefits on a global scale, however. For mHealth to be more beneficial in developing countries, research is needed to determine how to best make use of the technology. Not all cultures see benefits in things such as appointment reminders or specific disease updates, and determining which set of disease benefits are most desired in each region will ultimately help create a more useful network of mHealth technology.
