Denise Anthony, PhD

Denise Anthony is Department Chair and Professor of Health Management & Policy in the School of Public Health at the University of Michigan. She also holds appointments in the Department of Sociology and the School of Information. Professor Anthony’s research explores social dynamics of cooperation, trust and privacy, and how those dynamics shape the use of technologies, as well as the data produced via those technologies. While new technologies offer potential to improve health and other aspects of life across populations, they may also produce unintended harms, including exacerbating health disparities, or enabling data flows that violate expectations of privacy or that create security risks. Her multi-disciplinary research has been funded by grants from the National Science Foundation and others, and published in sociology as well as in health policy and computer science journals, including among others the American Sociological Review, Social Science and Medicine, Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association, Health Affairs, and IEEE Pervasive Computing. Some of her current projects include research on racial disparities in the use of telehealth during COVID, the role of trust in the use of health technologies, and examining the security and privacy implications of Smart Homes as part of the National Science Foundation funded SPLICE Project.
Professor Anthony holds a PhD in Sociology. Prior to joining the University of Michigan in 2018, she was Professor and past-Chair (2007-11) in the Department of Sociology at Dartmouth College. From 2014-17 she served as Vice Provost for Academic Initiatives at Dartmouth.
