Dr. Beth McGinty is a health policy researcher whose work focuses on mental health and substance use. Two major research foci include study of the implementation and outcomes of policies with the potential to support integration of behavioral, somatic, and social services for people with serious mental illness and analysis of how state laws affect the drug addiction and overdose crisis in the U.S. A hallmark of Dr. McGinty’s research is her use of mixed-methods to bring together approaches from the fields of public policy and implementation science. Dr. McGinty also conducts communication research examining how communication strategies influence public stigma toward, and support for policies that benefit, people with mental health or substance use conditions. At Johns Hopkins, Dr. McGinty teaches the course Social Policy for Vulnerable Populations and serves as the Co-Director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Mental Health and Addiction Policy Research. She also Co-Directs the Johns Hopkins ALACRITY Center for Health and Longevity in Mental Illness. She completed her PhD in Health and Public Policy from the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in 2013 and was awarded a MS in Health and Behavior Studies from Columbia University in 2006. Outside of work, Dr. McGinty can usually be found running, biking, hiking or playing cards with her family.
