Technology-based behavioral health interventions for mental health and substance abuse are a rapidly growing area of research. This article reviews the current state of research on the integration of technology-based interventions in substance abuse treatment. While studies have started examining issues of access, quality, and cost-effectiveness, more research is needed in these areas. Traditional research methodology is often inadequate with technology-interventions because of the rapid evolution of technology. In addition, a paucity of research has examined integrating technology into the current substance abuse treatment system and no implementation roadmap or toolkit currently exists. Future research should also examine the long-term impact of technology interventions.
