Article Excerpt: The federal substance abuse confidentiality regulations (also known as the “Part 2 Regulations“) have long provided important privacy protections for certain alcohol and drug abuse treatment information. However, in today’s increasingly connected health care system, some health care providers perceive the Part 2 Regulations as a roadblock to coordination of a patient’s alcohol or drug abuse treatment with other types of health care services. Accordingly, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, the federal agency that oversees the Part 2 Regulations, is considering several possible changes to the regulations to encourage more widespread sharing of alcohol and drug abuse treatment information.
