Program Overview
E-TREAT is a digital intervention designed to maintain motivation for individuals with substance use disorders while they are waiting to start treatment or moving between levels of care using a combination of Motivational Interviewing and digital tools. The intervention begins with a face-to-face assessment conducted by a recovery coach, who also orients the client to the computer and online resources. The recovery coach provides ongoing personalized support and motivational coaching, including tailored feedback and messages delivered through phone calls, text messages, email, and web-based communication. Users complete worksheets and internet modules, and are provided with practical suggestions to support recovery, such as exploring ambivalence about treatment, improving communication, and strengthening self-motivation. Users also participate in group discussions that address topics such as readiness for treatment, the benefits of recovery, and building healthy support systems. E-TREAT also includes “Change Gauge”, a web-based assessment using the University of Rhode Island Change Assessment to measure readiness to change and guide interventions. In general, E-TREAT lasts 4 to 12 weeks and ends when users complete treatment at the parent treatment center.
